Christ Church refurb underway
CHRIST Church, Snodland, was due to close on October 17 to in- stall new heating and remove the pews and replace them with chairs. We reported in Town Talk in
June that the church needed to raise almost £57,000 to carry out the work. Church warden John Levett
said: “A new effective and effi- cient radiator-based heating sys- tem is being fitted into the church. To allow this to happen, and to make the building more suitable for community use, the pews will be removed and re- placed with appropriate chairs. “This also means that the church can more safely and ap- propriately
accommodate
wheelchairs and pushchairs and will ensure that the building is warm in the winter and can be used for more community activi- ties, such as the choral society.” It is hoped that the church will reopen for services on Novem- ber 27.

director of Ward Homes, devel- oper of the old sports ground, presented it to the town council, owner of the land, which, in turn, handed it over to the club. Vice-captain Rob Doorey said:
“The green is playing well and everybody who has been here has said how good it is playing on a new green. “We have become a stronger
club through this. Members who are not playing have been coming down to watch games – it is amaz- ing how many people in Snodland
A SNODLAND girl who has been running since she was eight years old has gone to university with the 2016 Olympics in her sights. Sarah Shepheard, of Queens Road, chose Teesside University, Middlesborough, not only for her forensic science course but also for its good sports section. She joined Paddock Wood Athletics Club on the rec- ommendation of her PE teacher at Snodland Church of England Primary School. Mum, Lorraine, is a qualified coach at the club, sister, Caroline, is a javelin thrower and dad, Doug, was a very competent runner. “I started entering open competitions when I was eight,” said Sarah. “I was only allowed to run 75 metres but as I grew older I knew I wanted to do long-distance running. After 11, I was doing 800, 1500 and 3000 me- tres on track and then five miles and 10k on roads.” She has represented Kent in the UK championships
but the former Holmesdale Technology College student hopes to be in the running for the 2016 marathon.

play bowls. I think people thought you had to work for the mill to be able to play at the club. “Wehavetodoeverythingour-
selves now but we kept the name Townsend Hook because it has such a good name in Kent. We have a lot of county bowlers and hopefully things will go forward.” The club won Maidstone League Division 3 this season, the Maidstone Triples League and the Knockout Cup. The club’s official opening will be at the start of next season.
