iSWM Practices Could Become Mandatory at the Local or Federal Level
Integrated storm water management (iSWM) policies adopted in 2009 for voluntary use by contractors and developers could be made mandatory by Dallas and other cities soon. The Dallas City Council is following cities like Houston and Austin in promoting iSWM practices. New federal clean water rules due this fall from the Environmental Protection Agency also pose to make iSWM mandatory for all American cities.
iSWM calls for storm water to be retained on a site instead of quickly running it off through storm drains, a practice that carries oil and other pollutants into rivers and lakes. To meet iSWM requirements, paved surfaces could be constructed with gravel or paving stones that permit water to seep through into the ground, more landscaped areas might be set aside, or a portion of a property could be used for a retention pond.
