contrast to the glazed, distressed looks of yesterday. Less staining and painting on lighter woods allowing the grain to show through, and metal finish doors complemented by concrete or concrete look countertops are other hot looks.


Textural materials range from artisan glass and ceramic tile, to solid woods and metals.


In the bath, the entire range of lighter neutrals are paired with colors that evoke the natural landscape, including the ocean and sky colors, green, rosy pink and terra cotta.


On the floor, hardwoods play perfectly into our obsession with all things natural. Look for wider planks in deeper richer colors, or at the other end of the spectrum, European white oaks in flax or blonde colors. If your style is about texture, no other natural stone has the dramatic texture and color of slate, and it has made a huge comeback. Mother Nature's own variations of color and texture allow slate, travertine, limestone, marble and granite the versatility to play the role of a neutral or accent color. Concrete flooring is another worthy consideration supporting both the monochromic palette and the grey fascination. When it comes to ceramic or porcelain tile, “textured, fabric-like surfaces,” “linear movement,” and “dimensionality” are some of the buzzwords. 18 X 18 and 18 X 36 sizes are a significant trend, with


large and small sizes used together to create monochromatic tile rugs. Today's laminate floors have become another serious contender among hard surface choices, offering realistic patterns of exotic woods, stone and ceramic tile that can be installed anywhere, over almost every surface.
