Focus on Vauxhall: TheAstra Vauxhall : Astra ecoFLEX
by Alisdair Suttie Vauxhall may have been through some turbulent times recently, but the firm has come out fighting with its superb new Astra hatch back.
Taking on the combined might of the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf is never easy, but Vauxhall has come up with a new Astra that’s more than worthy of consideration in such exalted company. A key part of competing with the Focus and Golf is cracking the company driver market, where Vauxhall has enjoyed considerable success in the past with the Astra.
Now, company users demand more than just a decent equipment list and reasonable economy as emissions play an ever greater part in how much tax is scythed off the driver’s income. To address this, Vauxhall has introduced an ecoFLEX model
to its new Astra range. EcoFLEX is Vauxhall’s super-efficient models, with others in the Corsa and Insignia ranges. For the Astra, it means a 109bhp 1.7-litre turbodiesel engine that records 62.8mpg combined economy and carbon dioxide emissions of 119g/km. Those emissions are sufficient to qualify the Astra ecoFLEX for low-rate road tax and they compare reasonably well with the Ford Focus ECOnetic.
However, if you look at the Focus when it has stop-start technology added to help save more fuel and emissions, the Astra begins to pale as the Ford gets its emissions under the magical 100g/km marker.
Choose a Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion and it delivers sub- 100g/km CO2 emissions from the get-go, so Vauxhall needs its Astra to satisfy in other areas.
