You are already involved in the life-saving objective of improving

the driving skills of young motorists, but have you ever thought about improving your own driving further? The IAM’s advanced driving course is not exclusively about safety, but also encourages the driver to feel confident on the road, to make good progress, and to get greater enjoyment from the driving experience.

Not only this, but with petrol prices remaining high there is a real financial benefit of advanced driving.

Better anticipation and awareness of the road environment reduce the need to brake and accelerate so heavily meaning you make the most of the fuel you do use. Making small changes to your driving style can easily reduce fuel consumption by

15 per cent. Recent research from the IAM found that almost 70 per cent of accidents are caused by driver error or reaction, and young drivers are overrepresented in these figures. Gaining a greater awareness of the advanced driving style will help you better appreciate both your risk on the road, and that of your learner’s.

The IAM Skill for Life package includes everything you need to become an advanced driver for just £139. Once you’ve signed up for the course you will be sent your membership pack and allocated to your nearest volunteer group – we have more than 200 groups around the country. Our volunteer observers will then take you out at a time mutually convenient to you both. Most people have six to eight of these observed runs, but if you need more, or are ready with less, this is completely flexible.

Once you’ve passed you’ll be a full member of the IAM, and will receive Advanced Driving magazine four times a year, and be eligible for all the other discount available to advanced drivers including preferential insurance rates with the IAM Surety scheme.

To date, over 400,000 people have taken the advanced test. The pass rate is around 75%, and we currently have over 100,000 active members.

The benefits of being an advanced driver don’t stop after you’ve passed. Most groups have an active social schedule including group meetings, driving events and socials throughout the year. And if teaching people to drive is more than a job for you, once you have passed your test you will have the opportunity to become an observer in your local group, helping others to improve their driving further, post-test.
