Asian Aerospace show: COMAC’s aircraft were more visible than its personnel JOB CENTRE

Easy as ABC COMAC could eventually become the C in the ‘ABC’ of civil aviation, but it can’t all be done in one jump by waving flags and beating one’s chest, which is the nationalistic and somewhat militaristic approach. In the last months since the Wenzhou bullet train crash, there has been a very significant backlash against these top-down driven, high tech high investment nationalistic projects. COMAC undoubtedly has the resources and the will, but does it have the time to catch up before the world moves on? Can drive and determination be substitutes for decades of knowledge and experience and that elusive quality of prime wisdom? The Asian characteristic of

concentrating on the long game may be at play here, as the establishment of a global rather than a local aerospace supply chain is a more certain outcome of the C919 exercise than the production of a world-beating product in what is already a very competitive market. Perhaps the plan does not centre on this aircraft being both a technological and economic success, but instead is providing a foundation for the fledgling commercial aerospace sector in China. The real focus, therefore, isn’t with the C919 project ... it’s with C929 and C939

which will come after that. y www.comac.cc
