WELCOME TO THE DUNDEE GRADUATE SKILLS AWARD (DGSA)
The DGSA, which is based on skills identified as
valuable by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), provides you with a means of demonstrating evidence of these skills, which will give you a clear advantage in a competitive graduate employment market.
The Skills Award enables you to manage and plan your personal development at university and encourages you to recognise the skills you can gain from a range of activities, in addition to your studies, including part-time jobs, volunteering, student representation, DUSA societies and sports.
The University of Dundee will recognise your skills development and attainment by awarding a certificate confirming your successful completion of the DGSA.
What next?
Visit the DGSA website
www.dundee.ac.uk/careers/skillsaward/ for full details of the five steps you need to take to get the Award:
Step 1: Register for the Award. Once you have registered you will receive an email from the Careers Service providing further details. For more information you are strongly advised to sign up for one of the optional regularly run induction sessions, which will explain the DGSA in more detail. These sessions, which will be held in the Careers Service, will be advertised on
www.dundee.ac.uk/careers/whatson/
Step 2: You will find a Skills Award tab on My PDP. This will take you to a list of eight key skills which graduate employers seek from students. It is based on the CBI list of graduate skills. You are unlikely to have all of these skills when you start, so you will begin by writing about those you do have, with examples of how you have developed them.
Step 3: To help you develop additional skills, you can try new experiences, focussing on skills you don’t have or those you need to improve on. Details are on the ‘How to gain skills’ page of the DGSA website.
KEY POINT: The Dundee Graduate Skills Award is your opportunity to take control of your employability and prove to employers and post graduate study providers that you have the drive and skills to succeed.
Step 4: Once you have reached Level 3 of your undergraduate studies or beyond, you can apply to be assessed for the Award. This involves self-reflection on your achievements, using the evidence and examples from your Skills Award page on My PDP. Full details are available on the ‘How to get the award’ page. Your application will be peer assessed and you will have the opportunity to peer assess others. These assessments are validated by the Careers Service.
Step 5: If successful, you will receive the Award. For some, further development may be required, after which you may reapply.
