MY PDP AN INTRODUCTION TO PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING

Personal development planning (PDP) is a structured process to help you plan for the future by reflecting on your learning, performance and achievements in your academic studies, your extracurricular activities and from your work experience.

Why do PDP? PDP will help you to:

• review, plan and take more responsibility for your personal development

• identify your goals and evaluate your progress towards achieving them

• become a more effective, independent, confident and self-directed student

• improve your career planning skills and enhance your employability • begin the process of continuing professional development in your chosen occupation.

PDP at the University of Dundee

At the University of Dundee, your planning will be supported online by the My PDP resource, accessible via My Dundee. You will find the My PDP tab beside the Help tab (top right) when you log in.

My PDP will: • guide you through a process of planning for the future, as you progress through university

• support you in creating a PDP Portfolio to record your thoughts and plans, by providing you with a set of pre-defined templates where you will be able to add text and link to files, images and websites

In addition, you may have a School ePortfolio, containing templates related to the specific transferable skills developed within your chosen subjects, or to use in a discussion with your Adviser of Studies

The PDP process involves four main activities which you should work through in sequence as you create your ePortfolio:

About Me - reflect on your skills, personality, motivations, interests, personal qualities and learning style

Opportunities - capitalise on your educational, personal and career opportunities Action Planning - focus your ideas, set yourself achievable targets and evaluate your progress CV Building - design an effective, customised CV that will enhance your employability.

Your PDP portfolio can be constructed on a step-by-step basis and built on year-after-year. As you revisit each section, you will be able to add more depth and detail as you progress through the University. By the time you graduate, not only will you have improved your understanding of your skills, qualities, and motivations, but you will also have created a well-developed CV.
