ith hindsight, the setting for my interview with adventurer and explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes


couldn’t have been more appropiate. Rotating around on the London Eye, walking along the Embankment, then being ushered in by PRs to the former County Hall (now a Marriott Hotel). It was great to watch the master of thinking on his feet – think on his feet.


He stoically and politely answered questions and oozed charm, and if he was at all irritated when I faltered as we were jumping off the London Eye mid-question, it was barely perceptible: “Shall we wait until we get inside?” I asked. “Let’s just carry on,” came a gentle reprimand from the ex-SAS ‘hard’ man and endurance record-holder. ‘Hard’ man because he’s known for, amongst other things, cutting off his

frost bitten fingers with a Black & Decker micro blade in his garden shed. And as for endurance, well, he’s run seven marathons in seven continents – having had a double bypass operation just before he took on the challenge.
