The best unsigned bands in the uk, and how to find them!

DROP THE BALL

NASDAQ

Loud, raucous and from the West Midlands, their take on US-style pop rock – think Weezer and Archers of Loaf – in all its melodic, distorted glory is nicely sharpened with an almost Mclusky-esque delivery. It’s ace stuff, big and dumb and hugely enjoyable. You can grab their latest EP Flag & Marker from Bandcamp for free and it’s well worth a download. Its blend of hyper melodic thrash and discordant nods is almost refreshing in its nonchalance. These guys are good and they probably don’t even realise it. Let them do a favour and allow them into your daily listening for a while. http://droptheball.bandcamp.com/releases

There’s not much I like more than when a riff gets utterly altered by drums and then a counter-melody pinging across the top. Your brain flips out and tries to work out what just happened. Once hooked , the rest of the awkward, off-kilter melodics filter through into a pleasant cave of absorption. This is less post- rock and more post-post-hardcore, perhaps. There’s vicious bombardments and savage riffs, as well as slower build-ups. Fascinating instrumental rock music, as it should be. http://soundcloud.com/nasdaq-band

“HOLOBEAMS & BROKEN MACHINES DISPARATE TEXTURES DITCH TRADITIONAL AMBIENT SOUNDS IN FAVOUR OF DRIVEN, REPETITIVE, ENGROSSING SOUNDSCAPES…”

PATCHED UP HEROES

Newcastle trio Patched Up Heroes seem to have worked out that jagged, well-paced riffs and staccato melodies work well together. In fact, they sound pretty damn accomplished for a modest band only in their second year. They also sound as dynamic and full-bodied as any trio you’d care to mention. Heartily gigging and working on an ace blend of tricksy guitar wrangling, like a cross between Biffy Clyro and Tellison, these three are tight and lean musically and whatever official recordings come next should be very interesting indeed. In the meantime, live shows sound like a place to be if their demos are anything to go by. http://www.myspace.com/patchedupheroes
