REVIEWED AXCRADLE

This hand-crafted guitar stand saves space onstage whilst hanging your guitar safely out of harm’s way… Words: Tim Slater

Conventional guitar stands come in all shapes and sizes but no matter how strong, flexible or compact they can claim to be it nevertheless can be tricky avoiding the clutter-factor that comes with having multiple guitar stands on a small stage. The AXcradle guitar hanger presents a novel solution to storing your guitar or guitars safely onstage and is the brainchild of British rock guitarist Jayson Seymour, who has combined his twin passions for heavy metal and woodwork to fashion this unusual accessory.

Top of the chops… First impressions of the AXcradle are of something that would look more at home at a Lord of the Rings convention or a medieval battle re-enactment society event.

it. The quality of the workmanship is pretty good, beveled edges help to give the AXcradle a finished feel whilst the padded guitar hangers provide a snug and secure fit. The poor quality of the stained finish is the only major disappointment, it looks like it was finished with creosote. Whilst the stenciled logos look pretty good, a better quality wood stain – carefully applied – would go a long way toward helping the AXcradle look less home-made and more like a high quality craftsman-made product. AXcradle

The AXcradle is made from a ‘T’ shape length of timber that measures proximately 52 x 40cms and is shaped to resemble a war hammer or maybe an executioner’s axe! Its somewhat fearsome appearance notwithstanding the AXcradle is designed for a more peaceful and practical purpose than belting an opponent around the head, although it might come in handy for bringing inter-band disputes to a swift conclusion! The AXcradle is designed to

hook itself to the carrying strap on an amplifier head using the Velcro loop attached to underside of the axe head shaped wedge. The two padded guitar hangers built into the ends of the AXcradle allow a

pair of guitars to dangle clear of the floor, one in front of the 412 speaker cabinet and a second one hanging on the right hand side of the amp stack. The design is quite clever in that AXcradle’s low profile surface offers excellent weight distribution and balance on top of the amplifier head, the Velcro loop simply anchors everything securely in place. Obviously this design wouldn’t work on a smaller combo because you need the height of a full stack to allow the guitars full clearance from the floor but in practice it works very well. In build quality terms our review AXcradle functioned perfectly, even though it had something of a ‘development prototype’ feel about

SHOULD I BUY ONE?

OK, we are dealing with a one- man band here and our criticism regarding the amateurish fi nish will hopefully be taken on board as constructive. As an idea AXcradle works really well, it has a strong brand identity whilst also being original and very practical. Better attention to detail would probably help to justify the price but as it goes Axcradle offers a genuinely practical solution to safe onstage guitar storage.
