Trucker’s blackout caused by illness A LORRY driver was killed after he blacked out at the wheel and his vehicle smashed through amotorway crash barrier and down an embankment. Wolfgang Kraul (57), from southern Germany, was taken ill as he
drove his articulated lorry on the London-bound M20 at Harriet- sham just after 8am on December 15. He had arrived through the Channel Tunnel that morning. He was rushed to hospital at Ashford but died later that day. Anarrative verdict was given at an inquest at Dover, which heard
that Mr Kraul had not been drinking. He lost consciousness and died as a result of bronchopneumonia, exacerbated by his injuries.

Young cricketers hit run of form BEARSTED U11s cricket team ended their season in style by beating Teston and Linton Park in theWeald of Kent League in consecutive fixtures. Charlie Luxton starred in both games, scoring 23 against Linton Park and 27 against Teston. Those two victories ended a barren spell in the league – and
with one game to play, against Staplehurst, the U11s were hoping for a hat-trick of wins as the Downs Mail went to press.
Scorer Robin Cross said the lads’ skills had improved hugely over the season.
Bredhurst church gets new roof
A SPECIAL ‘topping out’ cere- mony marked the final tile on the re-roofing project of St Peter’s Church in Bredhurst. The project was necessary fol- lowing a survey of the fabric of the church by the diocese’s sur- veyor, which caused serious concern because money set aside for repairs was insuffi- cient to cover the cost of a com- plete re-roofing. Applications were made to charitable donors, resulting in the Friends of Kent Churches
and Colyer-Ferguson Charitable Trust donating money towards the project. Fundraising events included Sponsor a Tile and concerts in St Peter’s Church and the church shop next door also made a donation. The fundraising appeal man-
aged to raise sufficient funds and the rector, the Rev Bonnie Appleton, symbolically put the last tile in place. A lighting project is next on the church’s agenda.
Bearsted Green garage refusal A PROPOSED alteration to a garage door in Bearsted Green was blocked as it was felt it would introduce an “alien feature” to the conservation area. Maidstone Council felt Mr and Mrs Gill’s application for Bell House, which involved the installation of a single “up and over” metal garage door, would have created a modern appearance that would fail to preserve the “vernacular character of Bell Oast, the setting of the Grade II listed BellHouse and would fail to contribute to the heritage asset of the conservation area”.
Sutton Street home plan ASHFOLD Estates has applied to erect a detached three-bed home on land next to The Cottage, Sutton Street, Bearsted. The developer says the dwelling would be sited within a “recognised gap” in the street scene. Three months ago, Ashfold outlined
an intention to build up to 70 homes on flood land at nearby Cross Keys.
