Local food boxes

Keveral Community of Growers, based at Keveral Farm in a sheltered valley overlooking Seaton beach, is a cooperative of local food producers who pool their resources to provide weekly deliveries throughout the Looe area and about 15 miles around.

With over 75% of the vegetables coming from within 10 miles of Looe and the majority of the rest coming from within 40 miles this is a truly local food option.

If you are looking for low food miles a local veg box is for you and it helps to support local food producers and keep your money in the local economy.

Jim and Marian Candy have 12 varieties of potatoes at Trerieve Farm, and in July planted 20,000 brassicas and 12,000 leeks to keep the box supplied over the autumn and winter.

At Keveral, Sean specialises in lettuce and other salad crops and was struggling to keep everything

watered during the dry spell, whilst Bill produces a range of high value vegetables, fruit and gourmet shitake and oyster mushrooms thanks to irrigation from the farm spring and Lambrini uses the abundance of fruits to make preserves.

Brian was getting short of grass this summer for his horses, that help him produce broad beans, onions and carrots on his land at Herodsfoot.

Between them all there is a good range of produce each week.

Bill says: ‘We try to produce as much as we can, but sometimes have to source produce from further afield; even Sean struggles to grow bananas in this climate!

‘By cutting out the middle men we can deliver a box or organic vegetables cheaper then you can get from the supermarket, and we always buy from as close to home as possible so your money stays in the local economy.

‘We also stock fruit, eggs, dried mushrooms and preserves and can accept Healthy Start vouchers,’ he said.

Most families have a box every week, some fortnightly. Whatever you choose, it is nice to enjoy the produce of our beautiful countryside.

Small: £8.00 Medium: £10.00 Large: £12.50

Also available: fruit boxes, eggs, and a selection of our jams, chutneys, juices

‘Bee a Hero’ at Cornish Maize Maze!

Everyone will be buzzin' around to help the Honeyheros at the 2011 Maize Maze near Saltash.

Your help is needed to search for the flowers around the maze and bring the nectar home to give the bees enough strength to find a new hive and build a new colony!

The game centres on the search for nectar and the pollination of plants. Collection of nectar from all the plants will give the code for the ‘Dance of the Bees’ and lead you to the location of the new hive.

The theme will explore the importance of Bees as pollinators, their role in food production and as indicators of the health of the countryside.

A maze with 3 miles of paths including two look out towers has been shaped into a buzzin' bee this year! Can you find your way out?

As well as this massive maze you can bounce on bouncy castles and trampolines, climb to the top of a huge bale tower, swing on swings, play giant Jenga, dig in the massive sandpit
