resident steadily improved, closing the year in fine fashion with a pair of third place fin- ishes at Atlantic Motorsport Park. Like Nel- son, Ferreira has a year’s experience with the S1000RR to draw from and gets a bonus he didn’t enjoy last summer – a dou- bleheader at Shannonville Motorsport Park. Shannonville is something of Ferreira’s home track and he didn’t get a chance to race there last year. An intriguing new team that also will run

the S1000RR is the Couturier Racing outfit with Francis Martin in the seat. Shut out of the BMW factory squad after 2010, Martin’s prospects looked grim for the coming sea- son. But he has hooked up with Amateur racer Stephane Couturier, for whom he is acting as a racing coach, and will run a BMW customer bike throughout the season. The two-time Canadian Superbike champ from Sherbrooke looked good at ICAR, and appeared all set for a third-place finish be- fore falling just a few corners from the finish. But he was undeterred and indicated that with a little more testing he could be a threat the rest of the way. Few who saw the first round would disagree… Jean-Francois Cyr was at Circuit ICAR

with a Suzuki GSX-R1000 and the veteran rider from Mascouche, QC could make an impression this season. He scored his lone career Superbike win at Autodrome St-Eu- stache, which makes its return to the na- tional schedule, back in 2003 and enjoyed

some strong runs in the Pro Sport Bike divi- sion last season, despite a limited schedule. Former Kawasaki factory pilot Alex Welsh

has reconnected with Zaid Saleemi of Z1 CycleTech this season to run Suzukis. While the team was limited to running a GSX-R600 at round one there is a GSX-R1000 in the plans. Welsh looked good on the 600cc Suzuki at ICAR, mind you, latching onto the second-place battle and finishing fourth. The Uxbridge, ON racer and Saleemi have a good history together, having teamed up to win the 2008 Pro Rookie of the Year title with a Triumph 675. Jodi Christie was a real breakout star of the 2010 season with his Honda

CBR600RR. Although he has seen his Honda Canada backing reduced, the Keene, ON racer is persevering with the 600 and still has the assistance of top suspen- sion guru John Sharrard from Accelerated Technologies. Christie was eighth at ICAR but there should be more to come. Another rider to watch on 600cc equip-

ment is Frank Trombino, who raced a Suzuki at ICAR but crashed out of the Su- perbike race while battling with Christie. The Woodbridge, ON racer is a multi-time Shan- nonville champion and has won a pair of Superbike races at Mosport (admittedly on bigger bikes). He can never be counted out. The BMW S1000RR has almost become
