PMM ADDS PICTURE FRAMING New Frame Shop Serves In-House Needs and Retail Customers

Penobscot Marine Museum, founded in 1936 and celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, has just added a new picture framing department that will serve the museum’s own framing needs and well as those of retail customers. Professional framer Lin Calista has joined the staff to oversee the operation. “We are excited to acquire our own in- house frame shop which will also serve the needs of our gift shop customers, visitors, and the general public,” said Executive Direc- tor Liz Lodge. “Lin has done framing for the museum for years and she does fantastic work. We’re especially pleased to have her on board.”

The museum has an ongoing need to mount and frame photos, paintings and other objects for its permanent collections, travel- ling exhibits and educational programs. Hav- ing the capability in-house will make the work more efficient and economical for the mu-

Retail customers will benefit from the museum’s custom framing service as well, receiving a 10 percent discount on historic photographs when purchased with framing. Museum members and artists having their own work framed will receive a 10 percent discount on framing.

A resident of Stockton Springs, Calista previously operated her own frame shop, Frame By Frame, in Searsport, and specializes in preservation or museum-quality framing. The retail service will offer a range of styles and materials, from standard-quality to archi- val.

furnishings and fixtures, pick out a boat, and drive away on your new electric scooter while the sounds of a ukulele band fill the air.”

The show’s collection of handcrafted essentials for coastal life reflects the traditions and styles of Maine’s past, the innovation of today, and the emerging technologies that are shaping our future. For that reason, the editorial component of the show annually explores a different element of how “Tradition Shapes Innovation.” The focus for 2011 will be on coastal life circa 1936 from industry and enterprise to art, music, film and fashion, inspired in part by the 75th anniversaries of both the Penobscot Marine Museum and the Maine Windjammer Fleet. Historical elements and images of Rockland and the coast from the PMM collection will capture the essence of the era, and exhibits will trace the influences of that time on the products of today. There will be vintage cars, antique canoes and ice boats, classic sail and powerboats, plus films from Northeast Historic Film and other local historians.

As ever, the show will offer a diverse mix of live music, local food, and the ever-zany crowd favorite: the World Championship Boatyard Dog® Trials (Sunday, August 14, 10:30 a.m.). A few choice slots are still open to crazy canine competitors, so any interested and well-behaved hopefuls are encouraged to submit a letter of interest and a flattering image by June 30, 2011 to byd@maineboats.com. See www.maineboats.com for entry details. Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors is pleased to acknowledge generous support from the following sponsors of the 2011 show, including: Awlgrip, Bangor Savings
