SIZE MATTERS and JILL CAYDEN racing up the course in Diesel Class M at Boothbay Harbor.

BOOTHBAY/ROCKLAND – The anticipa- tion was over and some of the questions were ready to be answered. Racing began at Boothbay Harbor on 18 June and the follow- ing day we were racing in Rockland. The weather forecast for Saturday was showers and Sunday was supposed to be a great day. I am not sure if that affected the turn out, but I know the fog that some woke to on Saturday morning did. Despite the forecast there were 44 boats signed up, which was more than the previous year. So as the fog moved out the 2011 racing got underway. The first races of the day were for boats from the Boothbay area. There were no en- trants in the first race for gasoline engines. The next race was diesel engines up to 499 hp, which had three entrants. Marcus Curtis’ SLOWHAND [Crooked River 28, 210-hp Cummins] pulling ahead for the win. Marshall Farnham's GOVERNOR [Calvin Beal 34, 375- hp John Deere] edged out his father, Fred Farnham in SHELLENE TOO [Young Broth- ers 38, 490-hp Lugger]. The final race for Boothbay Boats was a total mis-match with David Taylor’s MISTY [Crowley Beal 33, 650 hp Scania] competing against Rusty Court’s CASEY ANN [Bruno Stillman 42, 220-hp Cat- erpillar]. MISTY took the easy win. Next came the three Work Boat Classes. The first class was boats powered up to 30 hp and there were only two entrants. Nick Hawk’s PABST [10-foot Puffin, 18-hp Tohatsu] took this class. In the next class, 31-

90 hp, Eben Wilson’s WORKING GIRL [14- foot Murphy, 40 hp Tohatsu] was the winner. In the class with 91 hp and over it was Steve Johnson's LYNN MARIE [Jingle Johnson 28, with a 454 cubic inch Chevrolet and twin 200- hp Yamaha outboards on the stern] just get- ting by William DeBery’s SUPA GUPP [Crowley-Beal 23, 225 hp Honda]. There were only three boats entered in the Gasoline Classes. In Class A, 4 and 6 cylinders, there was just CRY BABY [D&L Boat Works 25’, 292 cid Chevrolet] entered so she raced the other two boats FROSTY PUNKIN [General Marine 26, 350-hp Cru- sader] and LINDA CAROL [Repco 30, 350 cu. in. Chevrolet], which were both entered in Class B V-8 up to 375 cu in. In a heated battle for Class B it was LINDA CAROL the winner. Where were the big Gasoline racers? FOOLISH PLEASURE [Custom 30-footer, 632 cid Chevrolet] and LORNA R. [Riley Beal, 1973, 496 Chevrolet] were a no show. There were 33 boats entered in the Diesel Classes. There was only one entrant in Class A, Marcus Curtis’ SLOWHAND [Crooked River 28, 210-hp Cummins]; Class E, 336 to 435 hp, 24 to 33 feet, Bryant Ciomei’s GENERAL II [Osmond 29, 370-hp Volvo]. to 235 hp, 32 feet and over, there were two entrants and its was Matthew Taylor’s TRACY COLE [Crowley 36, 220-hp John Deere] besting Matt Thibault’s SANDRA ANN [Young Brothers 33, 210-hp Cummins]. Class C, 236 to 335 hp, 24 to 33 feet, saw three boats come to the line. Joseph Pinkham’s MISS M.J. [Crowley Beal 33, 325 hp] with a
