Page 18. MAINE COASTAL NEWS July 2011 LOBSTER BOAT RACING SEASON IN FULL SWING ABIGAIL & CARTER and EMILY GRACE in a great wooden boat battle at Boothbay. Continued from Page 4.

there was only one entrant in Class A, Gavin Holland’s BABY BARON [Holland 14, 30-hp Yamaha]. There were six boats scheduled to come to the line, but just four showed. The winner was Ed Upham’s VALKYRIE [Otis, 65-hp Johnson]. There were three boats on the starting line for Class C, LYNN MARIE made it up the course with ease, crossing the line first with a speed of 45.1 mph. There were seven entrants in the Gaso- line Classes. Class A and B were combined since just CRY BABY was entered in Class A. It would be interesting to see who she would do in these conditions against LINDA CAROL, FROSTY PUNKIN and Donald Hilt, Jr.’s MARDON [Webbers Cove 29, 350-hp Chevrolet]. LINDA CAROL and FROSTY PUNKIN battled for the lead and at the line it was LINDA CAROL by a boat length. In Class C two boats came to the line. Lindsay Durkee’s BLACK DIAMOND [Holland 32, 454 cid Chevrolet] showed up and would face Rocky Alley's LORNA R. Since there was

only one boat in Class D the two classes were combined. When the flag dropped FOOLISH PLEASURE and LORNA R. stepped out into the lead and came up the course battling for the top spot. As they neared the finish line FOOLISH PLEASURE slowed and LORNA R. crossed the first. BLACK DIAMOND took second in her class.

There was a great turn out in the diesel classes. In Class A there were four entrants. SLOWHAND got her second win of the weekend, followed by Gary Hatch’s QUEEN’S LADY [Paul Chapman, 210-hp John Deere]. Five boats came to the line in Class B. The win went to Paula Jean Lunt’s ENDURANCE [Holland 32, 210-hp Cummins] with a speed of 22.3 mph. It was a real tight battle up the left side of the course in Class C and at the finish line it was Mitchell Eaton’s BRIAN MITCHELL [Young Brothers 33, 300- hp Caterpillar] followed by MISS KATIE. The dominate boat for the last several years in Class D has been Cory Robertson’s PISSCUTTAH II [South Shore 34, 300-hp John Deere]. She was absent from Boothbay

and it was now wondered how LIZZIE, who won Boothbay, would fair. At the line it was LIZZIE taking the top spot, with PISSCUTTAH II second and RICH RE- TURNS third. Sid and Julie Eaton's KIMBERLEY BELLE [AJ-28, 370-hp Volvo] won Class E with GENERAL II second. There were six entrants in Class F and again the top battle was between MS. ROSE and DOUBLE G, which was won by MS. ROSE. Class G was a repeat of the day before with SEACOCK besting EMILY GRACE. FIRST TEAM con- tinued their winning ways in Class H with a speed of 33.8 mph. Second went to Mark Bemis’ STARLIGHT EXPRESS [Holland 38, 525-hp John Deere]. The race in Class I had been very close at Boothbay and it proved so again, but this time MISTY was the winner. Second went to LISA MARIE and third was THREE STARS. In Class J, JANICE ELAINE had new competition from Wendall Bryant’s 16TH

AVENUE [Holland 38; 660-hp Caterpil- lar] from Cutler. 16TH

AVENUE broke out into

the lead and crossed the finish line first. Second went to JANICE ELAINE, followed by MOLLY RYAN and DECADENCE. Again their were no entrants in Class K, but there were two boats entered in Class L. Alfred Osgood’s STARLIGHT EXPRESS [Northern Bay 36, 900+-hp Mack] came to the line and faced off against Robert Young’s CYNTHIA LYNN [Northern Bay 38, 1,000-hp Caterpil- lar]. STARLIGHT EXPRESS running down the course is a spectacular sight and she did it in the lead from start to finish with a speed of 54.2 mph. Now one should always know where the finish line is and you would be amazed at how many do not. In Class M SIZE MATTERS was leading by a couple of boat lengths when they slowed, allowing GRAMP’S BIRD to sneak by for the win.

WHISTLIN’ DIXIE, 4 GIRLS, ABIGAIL & CARTER, Nick Lemieux’ PHANTOM [Young Brothers 46, 825-hp, Detroit] and Murray Thompson’s SUNDAY MONEY [Duffy 42, 800-hp Caterpillar] all came to the line for Class N. With a speed of 40.9 mph it was WHISTLIN’ DIXIE first. Second was 4 GIRLS and third was ABIGAIL & CARTER. Five boats came to the line for the Gaso- line Free-for-All, but LORNA R. was not there. With no real threat FOOLISH PLEA- SURE only needed 36.6 mph to take the win. Oh was there a surprise in the Diesel Free-for-All. Alfred Osgood’s STARLIGHT EXPRESS and it was CYNTHIA LYNN just getting by WHISTLIN’ DIXIE for the win. Seven boats were on the line for the Wooden Boat Race. It was a close race be- tween EMILY GRACE and ABIGAIL & CARTER, a real David and Goliath battle. EMILY GRACE held on for the win, ABIGAIL & CARTER second and LIZZIE third. Now it was the final race of the day, Fastest Lobster Boat. When the flag dropped the early leader was FOOLISH PLEASURE who sped up the course with the big diesels in pursuit. As she neared the finish line she sputtered and slowed, but then she caught again keeping her lead, only to sputter and die. This allowed CYNTHIA LYNN to streak across the finish for the win with WHISTLIN’ DIXIE second. FOOLISH PLEASURE man- aged to get back going and got third. It was a great day of racing and now our attention turns to the Moosebec Reach Races on 2 July.
