June 1, 2011 Dear Professional Trainer,

As a professional trainer, you play a respected and important role in our industry. The USHJA is seeking your help as we launch a pilot program aimed to identify exceptional judges and to improve the skill set of those who preside over Federation Licensed competitions offering hunter, hunter seat equitation and hunter breeding sections. This pilot program will offer professionals a mechanism to confidentially evaluate judges on knowledge, impartiality and professionalism.

The role of the “hunter” judge is largely subjective and their decisions have an immense impact on our sport. Ensuring officials are selected appropriately for the event level they are officiating, and ensuring they are well versed in the most current curriculum, is a vital component. The USEF and USHJA Officials Committee’s have worked together to open the licensing system to bring in new judges and completely restructure the judge’s clinics format and curriculum. These committees are also currently working on how to hold officials accountable.

The final component to creating an improved system is to determine if there should be a rating system or level for judges. Data collection is an essential component of making this decision. An automated system will be in place so that during the next five months, you should receive an email after each USEF competition you attend asking you to evaluate the judges in the hunter, hunter seat or hunter breeding divisions in which you participated. It is important that you only evaluate those judges who officiated in classes in which you participated. You will have thirty days from receipt of each email to complete your evaluation for the judges at that competition.

The goal over the next five months is to collect your confidential input. The USHJA Officials Committee will analyze the data to determine if this approach can help us develop a mechanism to evaluate judges, improve how judges are selected for horse shows and determine if some type of additional training is needed. The results will be confidential and will be solely based on a numerical system. At the USHJA Annual Meeting in December, the Officials Committee will present a summary of the results of this project.

This data will only be meaningful and useful if each professional takes the time to send in their evaluation including both positive and negative responses. We cannot make any changes of this magnitude without your feedback.

We strongly encourage everyone to play a part in improving the integrity of our sport. We believe this data will create an environment for judges to be appropriately evaluated based on their skill set and commitment to continuous improvement.
