ithout sponsors the hunt- er-jumper sport would be quite different. A manag-


er’s ability to offer classes with a nice amount of prize money would be di- rectly impacted without them. In this time of economic stress, show man- agers are still trying to forge forward with their shows and would like to keep our horses and owners in mo- tion and on the road. But just why do companies and


individuals step forward and write a check that “sponsors” the prize mon- ey in a class offered???? There could be a couple of reasons but the pri- mary reason for companies, is to sell their product! It’s really a simple con- cept, they write the check in order to get exposure to riders who hopefully need and will buy their product. However, that is where the water can


get a little murky. Riders and owners really do want the classes sponsored and sponsors really do want to sell their products. Simple as it seems, the basic concept can get lost if the obvious is overlooked. It’s as simple as doing business with companies that support financially your ability


to have shows at all. It’s as simple as …if riders want more companies to step up and sponsor…..riders need to give them their business at every possible opportunity. Otherwise, bye bye sponsors!! If you need a truck, don’t just go


buy a truck!! Take a look around and find the actual truck company who has stepped to the front with spon- sor money. Not necessarily the brand (Ford, Chevy, etc) but the actual deal- er…the guy who wrote the check for your last class. If you are looking for a Ford, even if you have to drive a bit, buy from a sponsoring Ford deal- ership! If you need a supplement, when-


ever possible, go directly to a spon- soring supplement company or tack store that sells it, and buy it there. Maybe the supplement you use does not a sponsor anything at shows, at the very least take a look at the pos- sibility of using the products offered by show sponsors!! When you consider and decide


where you are going to stay during the horse show, it only takes a minute to look in the prize list and see what


hotels are sponsors and stay there!!! The “official” hotels for each show are a vital part of making financial numbers work, stay there. If a credit card merchant services company is writing a check to sponsor your Grand Prix or put a jump in the show ring, please support that com- pany and give them your business… they are giving you their money!!! When an insurance company steps


to the front to offer prize money, that is the company you would want to contact for your horse insurance. The economy is struggling right


now, but the shows go on. It gets tougher and tougher to find spon- sors. If riders really want to have more prize money, they should help by stepping up and taking hold of the companies and products offered by sponsors. If that does not happen, the spon-


sor money could dry up more than it already has. Reality is really simple… they want our business and need us, and we want their business and need them. Seems a partnership of sorts is a win-win, as long as both sides play together!!!


It’s as simple as …if riders want more companies to step up and sponsor….. riders need to give them their business at every possible opportunity.
