Dear ShowBiz, I am just catching up on some past ShowBiz issues and saw the recent Jan/Feb '11 issue with the Back in the
Day photos. Having grown up in the San Fernando Valley, I recognize many names and faces, but most special was the picture of Jolene LaBour, who I started riding with back in 1980 at Sleepy Hollow Stables in Chatsworth. I learned so much from her then and she really made me into a rider and it was also through her that I met Candice Schlom. Candice had already
advanced on to bigger and better things even then at the age of 13 and it is so incredible to see where she is today. Jolene was able to see a diamond in the rough and was always willing to work with what she had. I came to her with a horse that had been trained
Western, had only been ridden English a few times and wouldn't jump hardly anything for me. When he would, it was never two in a row but Jolene knew he was all I had and she convinced my parents to pay for some training. Jolene and Molly McManama spent one or two months convincing my horse to jump and after that it was about doing it right. I was able to be high point Champion in the hunters the next year. Jolene then saw that she had taken me as far as she could and knew it was time for me to move on to another trainer. It wasn't a smooth transition

as I didn’t want to go, but it made me a better person and I am a better owner, student and rider today because of her. Thank you for reminding me of her by including that incredible picture of her. I wish I could have seen her ride at that level.
