New generations - the 5th avenue of service


Youth leadership Competition: The flagship competition of our district. We are delighted that our District Council agreed to continue with this great competition. All clubs will subscribe to help finance the weeks trip to Euroscola in Strasbourg. Aimed at students in the senior cycle with leadership skills. Twenty‑four district winners, three leaders, visit Stormont, The Dáil, European offices in Belfast and Dublin. Met Political leaders, We than headed to Euroscola in Strasbourg. Wonderful weeks experience. Please, all clubs, do participate in this great competition, it brings


young life into your clubs. The task of interviewing is very rewarding, of these young people. There is plenty of support and information for you to get involved.


RTN Sam Crowe from Carrickfergus is coordinator of this competition. Young Chef:


Aimed at students, aged 15 to 17 years, budding young chefs interested in cooking. Depending on number of entries , club heats early February, District final early March, Winner goes to RIBI final April 2012 Young Chef Alex‑ Storey Cosgrove from Limerick Thomond Rotary


Club won the District club Final , and attended RIBI Final last April in London RTN Teresa OʼBrien from Cork Douglas runs this competition


Young Writer:


Great competition for children, in three age categories. Children are invited to submit a written piece, varying in length depending on age. Poems are also accepted. Theme is Olympic Spirit or Olympic Dreams. All details , rules and guidelines available on line with Application form. RTN Patrick Towers from Galway runs competition.


Young Photographer:


Another great competition for young people, three age categories also. Olympic theme the same as young Writer. In addition each entrant must provide , in no more than 50 words , a description of inspiration for their photographs and how they reflect the theme. All details on line. RTN Werner Scheel from Londonderry is looking after this competition


Youth Speaks:


This competition aims to offer young people an experience of speaking in public, as members of a team. Rules, guidelines, and entry forms on line. Please encourage schools, colleges, and youth groups to take part. Again, the theme is the Olympics. RTN Charles Gault from Belfast East is running this competition.


Rotary Young Citizen Awards: These Young Citizen Awards were conceived by RIBI in association with BBC News. This award recognizes young people under the age 25, who have demonstrated their commitment to citizenship working on projects in the community. It can be an individual or a group. All rules, guidelines and entry forms on line.


To make sure all youth Activities run as smooth as possible, please check information on the District website www.rotary.ie/youth All clubs will receive a New Generations newsletter, with full details of all activities and details of Rotarians in charge of competitions. I hope that most of you will have already been in touch with the schools


and youth clubs in your area to let them know what New Generations has to offer.


Interact and Rotaract Clubs:


These clubs are Rotary International service clubs for young people, sponsored by individual Rotary clubs. Rotary clubs provide support and guidance, but are self‑governing and self‑supporting.


These two programmes are fast growing throughout RIBI, and need to be encouraged in our District. These young people are our future. Interact Clubs‑ contact Darren Mornin from Limavady Rotaract clubs – contact Maria McGilly from Armagh


Youth Exchange: Very popular, requests growing in number. Short Term, Long Term, and Camps. Every year young people enjoy the experience of a lifetime through Rotary Youth Exchange.


Making new friends, learning new languages, living in another country, immersing themselves in new foreign cultures. A journey of self‑discovery that changes their lives forever. We should be selling Youth Exchange to our local Youth Clubs, schools and colleges. It is never too late to get involved.
