Belfast - the second 50

Paul Harris awards presented in Belfast

The Rotary Club of Belfast is proud to launch the Centenary book “The Rotary Club of Belfast...the second fifty years”.

The magazine‑style book, whilst not a complete historical record, is liberally illustrated and leaves the reader with a vibrant impression of the many and varied activities, relationships, connections and contributions the Club has made.

Presenting the first copy to the Lord Mayor of Belfast, President Brian Clements said “I hope you enjoy this fascinating record of our second fifty years. As we approach our Centenary we do so with pride in the achievements of this great Club and we give thanks for the many Rotarians of vision and compassion who have devoted a part of their lives to the Rotary movement. We have served our community well both here and abroad and we have been true to our motto of ʻService above Selfʼ. The society within which we live and serve has altered greatly over the last 100 years and we have changed also. We must, however, be prepared to change even more in the future and continue to attract like‑thinking men and women who share our desire to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Let us look back with pride and forward into the next century with confidence and enthusiasm.”

He recorded the thanks of the Club to P.P. Gordon Millington for his outstanding compilation and to all those who helped and contributed to it. The Lord Mayor thanked the Club and said that he had been fascinated to read the long and distinguished Club history – referring in particular to the Jubilee project of the first Abbeyfield House and latterly the adoption of the TABU (Towards A Better Understanding) project. He welcomed the Clubʼs role in this project in the transformation of our society and in reaching out to those in need as evidenced by the Shelterboxes. He referred to the exciting position of Belfast now as a vibrant and cosmopolitan City which needs vision, leadership and commitment and the opportunities ahead need to be grasped, promoting a “can do” attitude ‑ “Belfastʼs time has come but the moment will not last”. He congratulated the Club on the celebrations and gave thanks for membersʼ selfless service, wishing the Club every success in the years ahead.

Copies of the Book are available from the Club £15.00 (in aid of Foundation).
