Having a ball in Cookstown
North Down Cricket Club raises funds for Rotary Charities
The Cookstown Rotary Club May Ball took place on 21st May in the Glenavon House Hotel, Cookstown, Co. Tyrone. Once again this yearʼs Ball was a huge success with approximately 250 people in attendance.
The main Charity to benefit from the Ball was Charis Integrated Cancer Care. The Cancer Care Centre, based just outside Cookstown is a unique concept in complementary cancer care. Situated in a beautiful scenic location overlooking the tranquil shores of Lough Fea, it offers a haven and retreat for men and women who have been diagnosed with cancer. The purpose built Centre is designed to support the needs of people diagnosed with cancer and their families through counselling, therapies and advice etc. As well as supporting Charis, the proceeds of the May Ball will also help local Rotary Charities.

Victorious captain Taimur Khan receives the winnerʼs prize from Comber Rotary President, Phillip Beggs.
The cricket match staged at The Green, Comber, last Friday raised a tidy sum for Rotary charities. The proceeds will be shared among a number of worthy causes including “ShelterBox” – which sends disaster relief boxes to disaster areas all over the world – Rotaryʼs Polio Eradication programme and the Jaipur Limb Appeal.
The Rotary Club of Comber would therefore like to thank all those involved in the venture for their generosity and help – the North Down Cricket Club, all those who participated in the game, and to those who attended and made their voluntary donations
The exciting Twenty 20 format game resulted in victory for the select Rotary International XI captained by former North Down professional Taimur Khan who had a pivotal role in instigating the event. It was he who visited Comber Rotary in the aftermath of the Pakistani floods and was told of the immediate aid being brought to the affected areas by Rotary Clubs worldwide through their ShelterBox scheme. He promised on the spot to arrange a charity cricket match to raise funds for Rotary charities. The losing Ulster Grasshoppers team was captained by North Down opening bat Neil Russell.
