FROM OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE
SUE HURDLE CHIEF EXECUTIVE
This year, partnerships both new and old have been the driving force behind our work. We are grateful to each and every one of our travel company partners (see pg 30). Without them the Travel Foundation would not exist and in the coming pages we highlight some of the ways that our major partners are making a difference.
The year also brought with it some exciting new alliances. A partnership with the Cyprus Tourism Organisation will see us significantly strengthen our programme of work in the country. In Kenya, we have partnered with the UNWTO ST-EP Foundation for a new project to increase benefits from tourism for local people. We were delighted to gain funding from the European Commission for the ambitious Greening Sri Lanka project with Switch Asia, and thanks to DEFRA we launched a replication water, waste and energy project in South Africa.
We were delighted that our work to create partnerships for sustainable tourism was recognised by the prestigious Charity Awards, and we were proud to receive our award alongside some of the country’s leading charitable organisations. Our thanks also go to the World Tourism Awards who acknowledged our work in 2010.
Our contribution alone cannot bring about the scale of change that is needed for people and the environment in tourism destinations. But, together with our partners we are beginning to make a difference to thousands of individuals impacted by tourism around the world and we hope that the positive impact of our work will continue to increase.
