GREENING SRI LANKA ENVIRONMENT
“After the project team visited our hotel we were able to implement greener measures across 80% of our operations. A feasibility study helped us to identify water and energy wastage and attend to this immediately. The project gave us many ideas that we can apply to our operations and is helping us to make changes without disturbing the quality of our services for customers. I have already seen some behavioural and attitude changes among the staff. By working with other hotels across the country, this project will help to protect natural resources and minimise our collective carbon footprint. This will be an opportunity to show the world that Sri Lankan hotels are using conservation practices in our hotel operations.” Mr. Marius Perera, Sigiriya Village, Sri Lanka
Many popular holiday destinations are struggling to reduce their carbon footprint and to cope with the increasing pressure tourism is placing on water resources. Our water and energy programme is helping hotels to make a difference in ten destinations. Greening Sri Lanka is the most ambitious of these initiatives and aims to engage all of the country’s
350 hotels over four years. Funded by the EU, the project is led by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce with other local partners. By providing training materials, workshops and ongoing expert support, together we aim to help Sri Lankan hoteliers reduce their water and energy consumption by up to 20%, whilst also reducing waste.
