SUSTAINABLE GOLF – MEXICO EDUCATION

“The training was very useful in getting the ‘why and how’ to help conserve the natural environment while building and maintaining a golf course. Since then, we have left several natural vegetation corridors to help fauna move around the property and reduce the impact that the golf course places on the ecosystem. Additionally, we have begun using biodegradable and biological pesticides to control pests and diseases and prevent contamination of the soil and water. For water protection, we have implemented natural lake management practices. This benefits us by providing competitive advantage in the market by letting our customers know the measures that we have taken to protect the environment during the construction and operation.” José Antonio Mozota, Cancún Country Club, Mexico

The popularity of golf breaks has grown dramatically in recent years. Golf tourism can generate benefits for economies and local communities, but it is vital that course owners and managers know how to protect the environment to help reduce issues such as water scarcity and pollution from chemical fertilisers and pesticide. José Antonio Mozota is from one of

eleven golf courses in Mexico that are taking action to protect the environment following training seminars provided by the Travel Foundation. The knowledge gained through the training sessions benefits the local environment and the courses themselves through promotion of their greener ethos to customers.
