Teens’ mental health services given a boost
NHSWest Kent is improving mental health serv- ices for children and young people, including in theMaidstone area. Out-of-hours care, support for children with at- tention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and services for 16 and 17-year-olds will all be im- proved, thanks to a £750,000 investment. Specialist nurses will be available out-of-hours,
365 days a year, to provide assessments for under- 18s in the emergency departments, medical wards and paediatric wards atMaidstone Hospital, Tun- bridgeWellsHospital at Pembury and Darent Val- ley Hospital. Helen Buckingham, deputy chief executive of
the three Kent and Medway Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), said: “We recognise the importance of pro- tecting young people’smental health andwellbe-
ing, and this investment will be a great boost to local services.” There will be more support and treatment for
16 and 17-year-olds acrossWest Kent, including a specific package of care for young people newly diagnosed with mental health problems. Young people with ADHD living in north-west
Kent will benefit from clinics to offer advice and support, home visits in times of crisis and work- shops for them and their families. The announcement follows February’s opening
of Woodlands House, Staplehurst, a state-of-the- art centre to help children and teenagers in Kent andMedwaywith severe mental health problems. It offers intensive inpatient support and a 24-
hour specialist community-based service for young people aged 12 to 18 across the county.
Loose Women? The more the merrier… THE number of Loose Womenisonthe slide – and that is not a good thing as far as Gordon Newton is concerned. Gordon formed the female Morris danc- ing team with the “nudge-nudge-wink- wink” name in the 1980s – long before the TV programme of the same name. They once numbered 12

but are now down to just half-a- dozen. Gordon, who used to
live in the village, declared: “I’m looking for more Loose women. We need to double the
numbers. They must be enthu- siastic and exuberant. It’s great fun and good exercise.” Loose Women once per- formed in front of the late Princess Margaret. They practise every Thurs-
day, from 8-10pm, in Langley village hall. Loose Women Morris per-
form their own style of Border Morris, described on their web- site as a “loose, loud, stompy kind of dancing”. Contact Gor- don Newton on 01622 862330. Loose Women’s Carol joins night walkers. See page 47.
