Tribute to town’s soldiers
APLAQUE has been unveiled to mark a floral makeover of the Rocky Hill warmemorial. The revamped garden com- memorates links with the Maidstone-based Royal Engi- neer and Gurkha regiments and recent conflicts in which they have fought. A number of plants with symbolic importance and in- terest have been used in the scheme. They include laurus nobilis (bay laurel) from the Royal Engineers' cap badge; rhododendron ‘Scarlet Won- der’ as red rhododendron is the national flower of Nepal

David Pickett donated money from his devolved budget to pay for the plaque, following a suggestion by Lib Dem colleague Fran Smith. The official ceremony was performed by retiring mayor, Cllr Eric Hotson, and leisure cabinetmember, Cllr Richard Ash.
New children’s centre opens THE new children’s centre at West Borough Primary School has been officially opened. The centre, based at the school site in Greenway, off Queens
Road, offers a range of activities and services for children aged up to five, their parents and carers. These include stay and play ses- sions, breast feeding support, weight management, advice on how to quit smoking and information on health walks.
Riverboat theft AHOUSEBOAT on the RiverMed- waywas the target of thieves, who stole a quantity of alcohol. Two white Europeans males aged about 21, both about 5ft 10in tall and of proportionate build, are suspected. One had brown hair and wore a dark tracksuit, the other wore a grey tracksuit with a waistcoat built in to the tracksuit top.
Ex-pub homes PLANNING permission was granted to redevelop the Rose Inn at Farleigh Hill, Tovil, to provide eight new homes. There will be five two-bed terraced houses and three two-bed flats – a re- duction on a previous con- sent for eleven two-bed flats and three two-bed houses
Police’s safety show KENT Police is holding an event to prove that Maidstone town centre is a safe place to live, socialise and work. The evening, in association with Maidstone and District Neighbour- hood Watch,willbeheldatKent Police College and will show the work being done by the police to help keep crime down. Senior officers will be available

Road refusal MAIDSTONE Council has blocked Ron Frazer’s out- line planning application to build four five-bedroom semi-detached homes at The Lodge, Sittingbourne Road,Maidstone. The borough’s decision
notice said: “The proposed development, including the levelling of the site, clearance of trees and veg- etation and the erection of four dwellings would re- sult in a cramped develop- ment that would harm the spacious and sylvan char- acter of the surrounding area and is likely to pro- vide inadequate garden space for the family dwellings.”
Carriage museum
open for business MAIDSTONE’s Carriage Museum has opened for the summer. The Mill Street museum
will be open to visitors until Sunday, September 4,
andisfreetoenter.The museum can be viewed Wednesdays to Sundays, from 12 to 4pm. Visitors can see more than 60 car- riages, each with a story to tell.
