Following triumphant UK tours in 2006, 2007 and 2009, The Spooky Men’s Chorale are packing their bags in their native New South Wales, ready to whisk themselves away from the eucalyptus-infused Blue Mountains for a whistle-stop run of nearly 40 gigs in England, Scotland and Wales.

Starting in July, the tour will take in numerous top league English festivals, two nights at the famous Edinburgh Fringe and culminate in a flagship date at the Victorian gothic gem of Islington’s Union Chapel (September 7).

The behatted line-up will regale Spooky veterans and virgins alike with rib-tickling and sometimes heart-rending original compositions and eloquent arrangements by the inspired deerstalker-topped Kiwi choral impresario, Stephen Taberner. Compellingly comic they may be but make no mistake, this is a class act. Not only can they sing like angels; they also maintain an impressive deadpan grandeur amidst the mayhem of their madcap humour. Who says men can’t multi-task?

The Spookies were formed by Melbourne-based Taberner in Sydney in 2001, inspired by the great Georgian choirs. A festival organiser’s dream., they will be busy wowing UK festival audiences at Cambridge, Warwick, Towersey, Wickham and Sidmouth Folk Week with numerous interwoven one night gigs the length and breadth of the country.
