TAG ENERGY SOLUTIONS SETS THE STANDARD FOR THE OFFSHOREWIND SUPPLY CHAIN
TAG Energy Solutions is leading the way in the UK in the development of the offshore wind industry supply chain.
Building upon extensive experience in offshore oil and gas, TAG ES identified opportunities in the renewables sector which require top quality transferable skills and expertise.
construction of its £20 million offshore wind tubular production facility.
“By spring 2011 TAG ES will have a new facility online that will house automated production systems for the manufacture of the monopiles, tripods, jackets and transition pieces required for offshore wind turbine foundations,” said Alex.
A SHEERNESS MILESTONE – PEEL PORTS AND VESTAS AGREEMENT
Peel Ports has signed an option agreement giving the world’s leading wind turbine manufacturer Vestas exclusive rights to a c70ha area of land at Port of Sheerness in Kent.
The agreement allows Vestas to build a fully-integrated wind turbine manufacturing and installation facility to serve the UK and European offshore market and deliver against their exciting plans for their new V164-7.0 MW offshore turbine.
Dennis Henderson, Peel Ports Group Business Development Director said:
“Peel Ports is delighted to have reached this significant milestone with Vestas and for our ports to be at the forefront of the offshore renewables sector, bringing substantial investment and new jobs to the UK and assisting the UK Government meet its Green targets.”
Alex Dawson, CEO
Chief Executive Alex Dawson, who has over 25 years experience across the offshore oil, gas and renewable energy industries, is a long-time believer in the wealth of opportunities the renewable sector offers, particularly in offshore wind. “Offshore wind offers the biggest opportunity for UK industry since the oil and gas boom of the 1970s.
And added “Construction of the facility’s shell is now complete and we are undertaking testing procedures prior to the installation of the specialist equipment.”
With the newly built factory now having a physical presence on the banks of the Tees, an important milestone has been laid in the creation of a robust and effective UK supply chain for the offshore wind market.
“This is the 21st century equivalent, with the potential to create significant employment and prosperity across the supply chain, particularly amongst those with the transferable skills from analogous industries, and bring massive economic benefits to this country.”
Grants from One North East and the Department of Energy and Climate Change, followed by private investment by Platina Partners and the Environmental Technologies Fund, have facilitated the

Alex believes the possibilities in the sector will have far-reaching effects, providing a stable and balanced energy platform translating into a positive future for the UK. “Forecasts indicate that 45m tonnes of steel needs to be produced for the foundations alone for the wind effort in the UK, North Sea and Baltic. The numbers and the potential are huge, offering great prospects and benefits in terms of job creation, energy security and emissions reduction.
“The offshore renewables industry has the potential to regenerate entire regions and herald the re-emergence of manufacturing in the UK.” He concluded.

“We see this development as the first step towards an integrated set of port facilities for the UK offshore wind and renewable energy sectors providing manufacturing, assembly, installation and O&M opportunities at Sheerness, A&P Tyne & Tees, Cammell Laird Birkenhead, Port of Liverpool, Manchester Ship Canal, Heysham and Clydeport, Hunterston & Inchgreen all under Peel Ports common ownership”
“The capacity to connect these port and fabrication facilities for the offshore wind industry will enable the East & West coasts of the UK and Ireland to be connected in a fully integrated supply chain solution providing two-way shipping and logistics opportunities which will reduce offshore wind manufacturing, consolidation and transportation costs and ultimately UK energy costs”. Dennis concluded.
