16 focus on oxford College joins Dragon’s Academy

From September, Oxfordshire students will be able to study for a pioneering qualification in enterprise and entrepreneurship at Oxford & Cherwell Valley College (OCVC), as it becomes an approved college partner of the high- profile National Enterprise Academy (NEA).

The NEA is the UK’s first non-profit educational institution dedicated to teaching enterprise and entrepreneurship and was founded by Dragons’ Den star Peter Jones CBE, who wanted to create a centre of excellence for developing enterprise skills. The Academy, which already works from campuses in Amersham, Manchester and Sheffield, is announcing a network of approved college partners nationwide.

Students aged between 16-19 years old will have the opportunity to study for a BTEC Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship that is backed nationally by top companies including

classes and workshops as they study for either a Level 2 or Level 3 qualification. Part of the Level 3 qualification will see students setting up their own real businesses and pitching for investment from local business angels.

Jones (pictured) said: “2011 marks a very important year for our Enterprise Academy and key to this is our exciting announcement about the opening of new commissioned college partners including OCVC that will be licensed to deliver my enterprise qualification around the country.

“Not only does this really begin to expand our nationwide presence,

Orange and Grant Thornton, who will provide coaches and mentors. The students will work on real-life business challenges and take part in master-

I am delighted that it will also enable hundreds of budding entrepreneurs across the UK to develop the skills and hands-on experience needed to embark

on a successful entrepreneurial future.

“We are in what the prime minister has called the UK’s ‘most entrepreneurial decade’. I believe that now is a critical time to engage and inspire our future entrepreneurs. To ensure this, we must nurture and support entrepreneurial talent in our young people and the National Enterprise Academy, with the support of our commissioned college partners, is at the heart of this endeavour.”

Sally Dicketts, principal at OCVC, said: “Business and vocational courses already play a huge part in the work we do here, especially in our rapidly expanding apprenticeships programme. We’re delighted to be among the first to become a Peter Jones Enterprise Academy approved college partner, and look forward to welcoming the first cohort of students. This is also a new opportunity for local business leaders and entrepreneurs to work with the college to share their experience and expertise with our Enterprise students.”
