TIM and Tim’s Top Tips by Tim Lambie & Tim Jones
If you have a backup routine created by us, that looks after your Outlook Express emails, then be aware, that as a result of a Microsoft update, the “archive” flag has been removed which means that your
emails may not be backing up as we designed. This is because of the changes over the years from Outlook Express to Windows Mail and then Windows live mail. The backup routine can be modified to work again, but it does need a visit, so give us a call if you think you are affected by this.
Internet Explorer 9 is now available and of course is something that you will eventually have to install but for now, there is no absolute need. It will come as an automatic update in the same way as we have all had Internet Explorer 8 when you allow the update to happen, but you will not be offered it on XP as this is only for Vista and above. It is now pre-installed on new Computers and we have seen this recently and of course it looks different to IE8 - another thing to have to get used to again.
Google Mail is great and we have been recommending it for some time, but we have noticed some problems with it in Windows Live Mail. This is the program that most of us are now using on Windows 7 machines, and it occurs if you used the setup wizard when setting up the account. WLM will automatically create the account for you, but it does so using IMAP and it is this which can produce the problems we have seen. We now advise that you follow the instructions on the Google website and set it up as a POP account (manually rather than using the automatic wizard) - as always, we can advise.
We regularly encounter laptops where we have to do some work and the battery is very nearly flat. This is usually news to the owner of the machine who thought the battery was full when it was shut down. Very often the machine has gone to sleep which continues to draw power from the battery. Make very sure that if you are in the habit of pressing the power button to shut down, that
the settings tally up with that request, because often they do not. In the Control Panel, check under power settings in the “advanced settings” area.
