WHAT’S ON IN JUNE ‘Across the Border’

An exhibition of pottery and paintings by Mark Hutton & Ian Purvis. 2pm-5pm daily 13th -17th June

Art at the Works, Ground Floor, The Works, 3 Dolvin Road, Tavistock

An exhibition of pottery and paintings by Mark Hutton and Ian Purvis will be held at Tavistock’s newest Art Gallery “Art at the Works” from 13th to 17th June.

Potter Mark Hutton says ‘I simply make pots thrown on the wheel exploiting the qualities of various clays and their textures and am particularly drawn to highly grogged clay. The red clay used, from Ireland, turns black once fired and due to the high iron content, reacts perfectly with a mixture of glazes to achieve what I hope becomes a unique piece of work. Added grog (chippings of already fired clay) provides texture to an otherwise smooth finish.”

Mark is self taught and during his varied career he has had exhibitions in France and Belgium as well as here in the South West. He says, “if you were to ask ‘Leach or Cardew?’ my answer would be “definitely Cardew”.

Ian Purvis (Painter) has recently moved to Cornwall, and started painting in oil in 1975 mainly working from photographs and attending life drawing classes. Self taught for many years, he graduated with a BA (Hons) Fine art in 2004.

Ian says, “My art has progressed over the years and I will continue to develop and vary the subject matter as this spreads my work over a wider audience. This will be reflected in the exhibition. This year, I am also taking part in the ‘Open Studios Cornwall’ from 28th May- 5th June and as a member of ‘Drawn to the Valley’ art group which combines artists from both sides of the Tamar Valley, another Open Studios- Aug 28- Sep 4.”
