Key priorities aired at first Enterprise M3 LEP event

Improving basic skills levels, faster broadband, accessing finance and support for innovation and business startups were among the key priorities for businesses attending the Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) conference last month.

The conference, held at Princes Hall in Aldershot last month, was the first event held by Enterprise M3 since it was approved by the Government as a LEP in February, and was organised to give businesses within the LEP, which covers the north Hampshire and north west Surrey area, an opportunity to provide their insight and direction for the new partnership.

Around 300 businesses, ranging from sole traders and small businesses to large international companies, were represented at the event, which saw Philip Rutnam, director general for the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS), deliver the keynote speech.

Representatives were asked what they believe to be the most powerful enablers of economic growth and the most serious barriers, before focusing on specific issues such as transport, skills and finance. Next steps for the LEP were also established, including plans to set up the Enterprise M3 board in the early summer.

The event also revealed positive news for the area, with 70% of those in attendance believing that their businesses will grow over the next two to three years.

Feedback and expressions of interest received from the conference will be collated, with the aim of setting up implementation groups and action groups in the summer to work on the LEP’s priorities.

Geoff French, interim chairman of Enterprise M3, said: “It was great to see so many people at our launch conference. Those in attendance provided excellent feedback on the issues that are most important to them and many volunteered to help us address their priorities. The next urgent task for Enterprise M3 is to establish action groups to work on these issues.”
