While based in Cairo, Egypt in 2010 as part of a residency
with Articulate Baboon Gallery (
www.articulatebaboon.com) Hatanaka and Thompson spent two months wandering and pulling inspiration from their daily observations and adventures. Tea for Three, a painting of Omar, the artists’ neighbor in Zamelek, Cairo, was a collaboration and uses images from photos and thin air.
“Omar lived down the street from us. We do not speak Arabic
nor does he speak English. We spoke in smiles, gestures, acting, and he shared photos of his family on his cellphone. He would invite us to sit, and we had tea together. While travelling, we were overwhelmed by how warm and friendly people were. People did not shy away from what is different from them: they wished to learn about us and shared their generous spirit with us. Even the very poor offered us food and insisted we shared in what they had. This is especially significant given the recent revolts; there was much evidence of the harsh circumstance most of the population lived with as well as the extreme divide of the haves and have- nots. We were struck by people’s beautiful attitude: people were very selfless and full of love. Omar really represents this: he had a bubbly personality and just wanted to laugh and sit with us. I think he reminds us to share our energy and give people our time. He reminds us to be in the moment. It excited us to meet people living simple lives who create their own happiness.”
