TIM and Tim’s Top Tips by Tim Lambie & Tim Jones

Have had to remove a lot of instances of Trusteer Rapport this month. The banks are very keen on you downloading this software and may well pester you to have it, if you do not. My view is that if you are already happy with the security of your machine, then there is no need to “overdo it”. The reason we have had to remove it is that it was installed on machines that were having trouble running 1 piece of security software and were struggling with Rapport as well. If in doubt, we can give you sensible advice based on your circumstances.

Watch out when restoring ipods etc. Try and backup the device before doing so if it will, but remember, that your purchases will only be backed up if you use “transfer purchases”. Without doing this, what you may then inadvertently do is restore it and lose all the purchases you made on the device before doing so, including apps, music and video. Lots and lots of computers came in during early March with spyware installed from a recent virus doing the rounds as a result of a number of websites (LSE,

Autotrader, Vue Cinemas and 6 other sites) being infected. System tool is not easy to remove, but we have more than got the measure of it and viruses like it. If it has happened to you, there is no single program that you can use and looking for alternatives on the internet may get you into even more trouble.

I had a very weird incident where someone had lost the paperclip in Windows Mail, despite there definitely being an attachment to the email. The upshot of it was that Internet Explorer 9 was installed which has not yet been released. An update to that program had changed the way her email program looked. Moral of the story is do not use Beta programs unless you really know what you are doing or are ready to face the consequences.

certain types of DVD. VLC Media Player has been around for a long time now, and I have been using it extensively for downloaded movies as well as those from a disc and I have never had a movie not play - I recommend it.

More and more people are using their computers to either watch TV on or play DVDs. One source of constant irritation is Windows Media Player not being able to play
