LA FEMIS, FRANCE The lowdown Founded in the mid-1980s La Fémis (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Métiers de l’Image et du Son) is a state school based in Paris and supervised by the Ministry of Culture and Media. An offshoot of L’Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques, a graduate film academy established in 1943, it is one of France’s leading schools. La Fémis offers four-year courses in seven fields: screenwriting, production, direction,


cinematography, sound, editing and production design. There are shorter courses in other subjects, including distribution and exhibition. Training is held by around 500 professionals who supervise the students’ work under the direction of department heads. The school produces more than 100 short films a year. Admission is by a competitive selection process between February and July. There is a separate selection for non-Europeans, with only three or four admitted. “The common point of our candidates [is that] they are curious people, passionate, cultured


and open minded,” says the school. La Fémis is a partner in various initiatives including L’Atelier/Masterclass, Passion To Market and A Fistful Of Euros. Alumni include Francois Ozon, Laetitia Masson, Alain Resnais. Fees $176 (€129) for the entrance competition, $490 (€360) per year for tuition plus $270 (€200) per year for social security. Requirements Students must have completed at least two years of study before entering the selection process. All courses are taught in French. LODZ FILM SCHOOL, POLAND The Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School The lowdown The celebrated Polish School is renowned for its strong artistic education, with former students such


as the late Krzysztof Kieslowski praising the formative role it had in their careers. The Directing Department of Film and Television offers full-time directing graduate and masters courses. The school has close ties with industry, providing talent for local TV and film companies. Polish students study for free but students from elsewhere pay. Alumni include Krzysztof Kieslowski, Roman Polanski, Krzysztof Zanussi. Fees Vary, but foreigners generally pay $12,300 (€9,000) for first-level studies and $17,800 (€13,000) for second-level. Requirements Professional film experience is not required. “We are a university and believe a talented person who receives an education at our school will learn everything that is necessary in order to start a career in the field of film-making,” the school states.
