through-production schemes, among them the UK’s Microwave, which chal- lenges London-based film-makers to shoot a full-length feature film for a maximum budget of $195,000 (£120,000). The scheme is funded by Film London alongside BBC Films and Skillset. Some of the features it has greenlit — including horror title Mum & Dad and Eran Creevy’s thriller Shifty — have secured UK theatrical releases. In the UK, a Skills Investment Fund

(SIF) levy on film production is col- lected by Skillset to support the profes- sional development of those working in production. Production companies are asked to contribute 0.5% of their total production budget to the SIF levy, up to a cap of $63,800 (£39,500). Revenue from this is being channelled into the Skillset Craft and Technical Skills Acad- emy, which launches at the end of March and is based in Pinewood. “[Producers] will see a direct link from what they give from their produc-

ing is the increasing prevalence of unpaid internships. This means people entering the industry may be those who can “afford not to be paid”, as Peplow puts it, rather than talented film-mak- ers from a range of backgrounds. n
