MICROWAVE, UK The lowdown Set up by Film London and BBC Films in 2006, Microwave is a micro-budget scheme which straddles creative and business development. It offers training through production and has backed several films which have won a UK release. Supported by Film London and BBC
Films, with funding from Skillset, the scheme challenges film-makers to
make a feature-length film for up to $195,000 (£120,000) with cash and in-kind support. The process provides teams with professional mentoring as well as assistance from facilities and service companies and marketing and sales advice. Films are given a theatrical release and are subsequently broadcast on the BBC. After shortlist interviews, up to 12 teams are invited to attend Film London’s development boot camp, Microschool, which combines seminars and masterclasses. After an extensive development process, the teams pitch to a greenlight panel and then the final projects are selected. Alumni include Steven Sheil (horror film Mum & Dad), director Eran Creevy (urban thriller Shifty) and Michael Maynard (urban teen romance Freestyle). Ill Manors, the debut from music star Ben Drew (aka Plan B) is in post.
Fees Microschool is $325 (£200) per team. Requirements Microwave does not fund individuals: only production companies based, managed and controlled within the 33 London Boroughs can apply. Microwave does not fund production companies based outside London even if their project takes place in the capital, due to the limited amount of funding available. Additionally, the core film-making team should have at least two of its members based in London, and the majority of all production and post-production work should take place in the city. Microwave is not for those entering
the film industry but rather for writers, directors and producers who have already demonstrated their talent in short films, commercials or similar. Participants 25 Registration deadline Spring/summer 2011 (exact date TBC)
