BERLINALE TALENT CAMPUS, GERMANY The lowdown Taking place during the Berlin International Film Festival, the Talent Campus is a six-day summit for aspiring film-makers, actors, critics and others. Billed as a creative academy and networking platform, the event involves workshops and lectures, many with top industry figures — such as Wim Wenders this year. It held its ninth edition at this year’s Berlinale. Alumni include Cristian Mungiu, Kornel Mundruczo, Fernando Eimbcke, Seyfi Teoman. Fees None. Expenses are partially covered. Requirements Film-makers with


different professional backgrounds are welcome, as long as they are committed to pursuing a career in film. Only film-school students in their final year or in a post-graduate programme should apply. Registration deadline Early October www.berlinale-talentcampus.de


ESCAC, SPAIN The lowdown Credited with kick- starting a new wave of Catalan cinema, Barcelona’s ESCAC — or Escola Superior de Cinema y Audiovisuals de Catalunya — is private but affiliated to the University of Barcelona and has a close working relationship with the local industry. There is a four-year graduate


honours course, and Course Zero for newcomers. The school is linked to production company Escandalo which produces first films made and crewed by ESCAC graduates. Alumni include Juan Antonio Bayona, Guillem Morales. Fees Approximately $11,000 (€8,000) per course. Masters range from $5,500- $9,650 (€4,000-€7,000). FAMU, CZECH REPUBLIC The Film andTV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague


The lowdown Prague’s FAMU school has a glowing reputation and a very long history with the leading Czech New Wave directors — Milos Forman and Jiri Menzel among them — having studied there. The school’s cinema and digital media master’s programme, which looks to open up its training to international students, is a three- year course in English focusing on screenwriting, directing and/or cinematography. It is billed as an “intensive hands-on and theoretical preparation which will enable students to work with DVCam, HD and DigiBeta as well as 16mm and 35mm film formats both on location and in the studio”.
