NUCA: COMING UP AT THE GALLERY:

NUCA Fine Art graduate Susan Gunn’s work is being exhibited in Te Gallery at NUCA until19th March.

In her work, Susan has explored and developed the use of a traditionally made material called ‘gesso’. Combining resilience with fragility, the medium is a mixture of glue, chalk and paint, and Susan has pioneered varying techniques to create landscapes of fissured surfaces, making the medium the subject of the painting itself.

From Friday 25th March to Wednesday 30th March the BA Illustration students will be hosting their annual fundraising event for Illustration Degree Show publications and promotion. The exhibition presents work by professional illustrators, Illustration alumni, staff and students. An auction of the work on show takes place from 6pm on Tuesday 29th March.

From Tuesday 19th April to Saturday 21st May, Marc Camille Chaimowicz’s exhibition visits The Gallery at NUCA before travelling to Nottingham Contemporary and the Performa Festival in New York.

PAUL WRIGHT - AN EXHIBITION OF STUDIES

Leicester-based painter Paul Wright has been producing his acclaimed and high- profile portraits since graduating from Falmouth nearly fifteen years ago. His current show includes a collection of smaller still-life and landscape studies. Working in oil on canvas, panel and zinc, his style is bold, painterly and with juicy brushwork that exudes confidence and an almost brash approach to his subject matter. Studies are box-framed and are available from Fractal in St. Giles Street, Norwich - a full catalogue of currently available work can be seen at www.fractalcontemporary.co.uk

NEW PUBLIC ART STUDIO OPENS IN NORWICH

Will Teather in his studio by Joe Lang

The newly established Anteros Art Foundation in Norwich opened in February, featuring a public glass-fronted artist’s studio overlooking the high street. The studio is held by the Anteros Artist-in-Residence, Will Teather. Passers by the arts venue on Fye Bridge Street will be able to see the artist working on his large scale canvasses from morning until evening. Will Teather is no stranger to public artist’s residencies, having had public art studios at both Anteros’s Bergh Apton site and, in 2007, at Aberdeen Arts Centre.

Mr Teather explained: “I enjoy the sense of theatre and performance to a public studio, which seems reflective of the theatrical content to my paintings, where Vaudevillian characters inhabit a play without beginning or end. I thrive on working in sociable environments, and I have no desire to fulfil the cliche of the artist isolated to his garret! I hope the residency will give visitors a true insight into the creative process.”

Mr Teather grew up in Norfolk before before completing his studies in London at Central St Martins and Chelsea College of Art. He lived and exhibited in the capital for seven years, returning to Norfolk in 2008. His paintings and drawings have featured in venues including London’s Colomb Art Gallery, The Mall Galleries, Gallery No 9 in Marciac, Norwich’s Art 18/21 and Oxfordshire’s Modern Artists Gallery. He has thrice been a finalist in Mayfair’s Cork Street Open Exhibition and was shortlisted for the international Celeste Prize 2009. Teather’s work is held in a number of notable collections in the UK and overseas.

John Hemmant, Anteros Director, said: “We are delighted to have Will on board as we enter this exciting new phase in our development. His fusion of deft use of technique with original ideas is the kind of thing we wish to foster in the students for our short course programmes. Having the studio so public brings an additional sense of life and interest to the arts centre.”
