Perfect Skin From Within
Written by Louise Thomas-Minns About eleven years ago, I must admit, I was a mess!
My acne prone skin was at its worst, I was overweight, unfit and relied on a barrage of processed foods to get me through my busy days as an area account manager for MD Formulations Skincare.
How could I, as a skin therapist, an expert in my field, be preaching about achieving healthy, glowing skin & not be doing everything in my power to portray this myself?
Something had to change. That change led me to becoming even more educated as a facialist and to the development of my signature ‘U and your skin’ facial.
I changed my lifestyle, adopted a new approach to eating, part of which, for me, deleted wheat & dairy from my diet - and I was amazed at the impact it had on my skin’s health.
The acne lesions started to slow, my skin was healing more efficiently and I got that ‘glow’ back to my sallow chops.
I now understood that my skin was a mirror, a reflection of my internal health, and armed with my products I began to develop and experiment with different combinations of nutrients and skin treatments to heal my skin.
I find it so exciting to see how this concept, which I’ve been working with for the last ten years, is becoming a ‘hot topic’. Nutraceuticals, products that target skin health from within, are big news right now, and it’s always been part of my work as a skin therapist, one of the three dimensional approaches I take to treating the skin.

Three years ago I realised that for me to really take my client’s skin to the next level, I needed more knowledge and for this I began collaborating with the font of all nutritional knowledge, Glen Matten.
Glen and I both approach our work with strong, evidence-based, scientific background, and so it makes complete sense for him to tackle my client’s skin health from within and for me to then topically target skin issues. With a joint ‘Healthy Ageing’ clinic & forthcoming workshops surrounding this unique approach, I look forward to sharing the latest information about achieving healthy skin. In the meantime, here are some tips on what to put in to let out a glowing skin!
Chocolate: Making the choice of reaching for some dark
chocolate (70% cocoa) can help to slow the ageing process. Dark chocolate contains protective antioxidants that defend the skin against harmful free radicals that we are exposed to daily, via UV rays, pollution, smoking

and excessive alcohol. So go ahead - I give you permission to indulge.
Cinnamon: All hail the cinnamon! I get through this in droves: sprinkling it over my porridge, adding it to baking or letting a whole stick infuse in a chilli or tagine.
This wonder spice, as well as tasting great, helps to balance our blood sugar levels, and it also has anti inflammatory properties. Inflammation in the body is responsible for many skin issues, from ageing to eczema, so increasing your intake of this spice can really help to calm things down and lead to long term benefits.
Nuts: Go nuts for nuts! Steer clear of the salt and fat loaded variety, but snack on the raw versions of pecans, almonds, brazils and walnuts, and while we’re at it, add some seeds to the mix, like sunflower and pumpkin.
All of these are rich in essential fats that are vital to skin health. They strengthen the cell’s membranes, allowing O2 and nutrients in and toxins out. They are fats that are good and that all the cells of your body need. Why not add some Tamari sauce to a nut mix and gently roast them in the oven for a nutrient rich, savoury treat… delicious.
Louise has taught in the practical and anatomy and physiology aspects of the beauty therapy course, gaining a Cert Ed in teaching and A1 NVQ assessor’s award. Louise writes regular articles and blogs for national and local periodicals and guests on BBC Radio.
