The boat to ferry visitors to Threave Island

KNOCKINAAM LODGE

At the south west tip of Scotland, yet only two hours from Glasgow, lies Knockinaam Lodge, one of Scotland’s finest small hotels, surrounded by 30 acres of garden with immaculate lawns running down to a private sandy beach. Knockinaam has the warm, inviting feel of a country house with friendly attentive staff who offer outstanding service.

There are ten wonderful bedrooms, five of which have magnificent seaviews and one a two bedroom suite. All have very different personalities. The traditional ambiance of the bedrooms is complimented by contemporary comfort. Fresh flowers, quality toiletries and other little touches create the perfect welcome when you first open the door.

Dining is a gastronomic experience. The skilful presentation of fresh local produce is matched to a stunning cellar and a vast selection of malts. The classical precision of the chef’s skilful Scottish cooking mixes well with attentive service in the elegant, candlelit restaurant, enjoying its 19th year with a Michelin Star. If the scenery does not take your breath away, the food will.

Knockinaam Lodge is steeped in history - Sir Winston Churchill met General Eisenhower and their Chiefs of Staff here during the Second World War and the area was the setting for John Buchan’s 39 Steps. This history, which is etched into the villages, towns and farms of this cornerstone of Scotland, is waiting to be explored. The gardens of Dumfries & Galloway are blessed with a climate unusual within Scotland. Elsewhere there is a wealth of places to see and things to do including The Robert Burns heritage Trail, good golf and numerous walks.
