A Call to Service A
s one of the most memorable lines of the twen- tieth century, it’s a quote that, even to this day, speaks to the heart of public service: “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” When newly-inaugurated President John F.
Kennedy pronounced these immortal words in 1961, he inspired generations of Americans to devote the best of themselves to help bring out the best in our country.
A Commitment to Civic Responsibility On an average day, about two million peo-
ple pass through America’s airports. That works out to over 700 million commercial passengers a year. These flyers—our friends, neighbors, and relatives—are busy on vacations, business trips, or simple journeys home. Regardless of who they are, or where they’re heading, these travelers all have one thing common: Each and every one of them needs to arrive at their destination safely. At the Transportation Security Administration
(TSA), we take the lead in securing our nation’s air- ports. We’re also involved in securing America’s railroads, highways, and public transit systems. We’re dedicated, skilled professionals who have made a commitment to civic responsibility. Our workforce, over 62,000 strong, hon- ors the precious gift of our citizenship by devoting our talents to safeguarding the fellow members of our society.
A Common Character You’re probably most familiar with us as the Transportation
Security Officers who screen passengers and luggage at airport checkpoints. As mission-critical as those front-line positions are, there’s a lot more to our agency. With careers ranging from human resources to information technology, we also employ a talented network of management, administrative, and profes- sional support. But no matter what our job, all of us at TSA are united by a
deep-felt, patriotic attachment to our mission. We share a com- mon character, one that values honesty, loyalty, and hard work. We also share a common spirit, one that allows us to dutifully give our all to the challenges we face daily. Such is the price, and the promise, of our citizenship.
Patriotism and Family TSA recognizes the strong link between patriotism and fam-
ily. We also understand the fact that a sensible work-life balance is important to most of us. That’s why we’ve developed careers that are family-friendly. At TSA, we’re intent on creating an environment where people want to come to work. Our agency is proud that our workforce closely reflects the
demographics of the United States. Diversity is criti- cal to our mission, lending us both credibility and sensitivity. A diverse workforce also gives us the ability to execute our mission in a way that will be understood and supported by the American popu- lation.
TSA is a relatively new organization, one
that has plenty of room for growth, even at the top. There are executive positions throughout our organization, and anyone with an entrepreneurial drive can find oppor-
tunities to work in different areas, to try differ- ent tasks, and to stretch themselves profession- ally.
Service Yields Rewards There’s a lot to be said about the intrinsic
rewards that come with public service. As a TSA employee, you’ll know your mission has been successful whenever the people you pro- tect arrive safely. The satisfaction of knowing you’ve done your job well can’t be over- stated. After all, few civilians do more on a
daily basis to safeguard America. But working for TSA also comes with many tangible rewards.
As a Federal employee, you’ll be eligible for the kind of benefits that are becoming increasingly rare in many commercial compa- nies. Our agency offers a wide range of health insurance choices, vacation, personal leave, paid holidays, paid training, flexible work schedules, supplemental insurance benefits, retirement in- vestment options, and a defined benefit (pension) retirement plan. We also offer a unique, competitive pay scale.
What You Can Do for Your Country Living in the United States is a privilege that comes with both
social and civic responsibilities. Stepping up to meet those re- sponsibilities, especially in difficult times, can satisfy your spirit, define your character, and bring meaning to your life. At the Transportation Security Administration, our mission is
to protect our nation’s transportation system by combining world-class technology with a highly-motivated, dedicated workforce. Toward this mission, each and every American has something to contribute. So, if you’ve been wondering “what you can do for your country,” why not begin here, at TSA?
