'Monster' Northumberland County Show

With more than 300 trade stands, spectacular main arena events, and nationally renowned agricultural and equine sections, Northumberland County Show is a highlight of the agricultural year.

In addition to the popular heavy horses and the Champion of Champions' Parade, this year's family attractions include monster trucks 'The Devil' and 'Big Pete', back by popular demand.

The show field will also host numerous marquees and stands, a working milking parlour, a shearing shed, bee-keeping displays, free parking and easy rail access. The Show also features competitive heavy and light horse sections and livestock classes for cattle, sheep, goat, alpaca, dogs, poultry, cavies, rabbits, stick dressing, competitive home crafts, and Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling. Competitive livestock showing classes: Cattle, Sheep, Heavy Horse, Goat, Alpaca, Shearing, KC Dogs, Poultry, Cavies, Rabbits, Stick Dressing, Competitive Home Crafts, Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling.

Agricultural highlight: Grand Parade of Livestock champions and Champion of Champions judging Arena attractions: Monster trucks Big Pete and the Grim Reaper. Big Pete is the world's only real monster truck at 16ft tall and 12ft wide and weighing 7.5 tonnes. It can jump 15ft in the air. John Woodman, President of Tynedale Agricultural Society, said: “The Show is a wonderful event, bringing town and country people together for a big day every year and showing townspeople what farming is really all about. The mix of agricultural competitive classes and demonstrations allows us to show people the real source of their food. “Our full working milking parlour, for example, costs a great deal to run on the day, but it's one of the most popular attractions and really gives people a taste of the country.”

Northumberland County Show 2011 is on Monday, May 30 at Tynedale Park, Corbridge. Discounted advance tickets are online at www.netaticket.com, tel 0845 230 5177. There is free parking and easy access on the train from Carlisle and Newcastle.

High sugar seed range now covers all grassland options

The 2011 herbage seed mixtures range from British Seed Houses includes four premium mixtures made up exclusively of Aberystwyth-bred high sugar ryegrasses and white clover blends.

The Aber HSG premium range comprises specialist cattle grazing and long term grazing options, plus a medium term cutting mixture and a fourth variation specifically for dairy farmers taking a first cut followed by aftermath grazing. All grazing mixtures are available with Puna II perennial chicory whilst the specialist cutting mixture has the option of adding red clover. “The ryegrass breeding programme at IBERS Aberystwyth University continues to produce outstanding varieties that combine yield with quality and are ideally suited to the UK climate,” points out Paul Billings of British Seed Houses. “These varieties all feature strongly on the independently compiled NIAB/TAG and SAC recommended lists and are made available first in our Aber HSG premium mixtures. “In the past year we have introduced the intermediate heading perennial ryegrass AberFarrell and the late heading varieties AberBite and AberChoice. These now feature in the premium mixtures alongside more established high ranking perennials such as AberMagic, AberStar, AberAvon and AberDart and the hybrids AberEcho and AberEve. “Now that we have such a broad range of high-performing varieties we are able to compile mixtures with the optimum heading date ranges for particular uses. This means mixtures are matched more accurately to farms' management systems and that ultimately means better use is made of the forage. “Inclusion of alternative forages such as perennial chicory and red clover is increasingly popular in certain contexts and hence we have extended the range to include quality options as appropriate.” Visit www.britishseedhouses.com
