farmyard poultry Verm-X Hatches a Bright Idea

Natural internal parasite control company Verm-X has announced the launch of a new product that aims to prove the effectiveness of its traditional herbal preparation.

The new 'Healthy Poultry Pack' contains a 250g tube of Poultry Pellets together with the newly launched Westgate Laboratories faecal egg count test kit and is currently available at a discounted price, allowing poultry owners to use Verm-X and at the same time request 'independent testing' of its efficacy.

The launch of the pack was prompted following one pharmaceutical giant's criticism of traditionally proved herbal preparations. At the recent Animal Health Distributors Association AHDA Conference Verm-X Consultant Veterinary Surgeon Nick Thompson MRCVS addressed some of the major flaws he saw in the study. Nick's message to a 400 strong audience of the UK's leading animal health product distributors and the attending SQPs was clear, “we can no longer continue to ignore the merits of herbal medicine. Herbs can play a valuable role alone, and alongside conventional medicine where necessary.”

At the same conference, concerns about the wide-spread use of synthetic chemical anthelmintics, particularly amongst horses, dogs and cats, were voiced and Nick also addressed the major issue of resistance in anthelmintics, some of the limitations of pharmacological medicine and discussed the sustainability and side-effects of drugs. “Herbal preparations have many added health benefits as well as specific effects”, he said, “and there is no known resistance to herbal preparations.”

Nick continued, “We need to bring herbal preparations into (internal parasite control) regimes to take the strain off pharmaceuticals. Resistance to anthelmintic treatment is a real problem that will never go away.”

AHDA Secretary General Ian Scott concluded, “From the point of view of AHDA we see a role for both types of products.”

The new 250g tube of Verm-X Poultry Pellets, included in the Healthy Poultry Pack, will last five birds over six months and the test kit from Westgate Laboratories contains everything needed for poultry keepers to safely send a faecal sample to the laboratory for worm egg count analysis, at no extra cost.

Suitable for chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese, the Verm-X Healthy Poultry Pack is

currently available from over 2,000 pet shops and country retailers at the special offer price of £17.99, normal price £21.99. To find your local stockist and to watch Nick Thompson's full address at the AHDA Conference, visit www.verm-x.com

High Performance Bedding for Poultry and Game

Unibed Poultry and Game is a unique poultry bedding produced in Yorkshire from locally sourced premium quality straw that is chopped and then put through a rigorous dust extraction process before being treated with a non-toxic disinfectant that is anti-viral and anti-fungal. Unibed Poultry and Game is suitable for all types of poultry, ducks, geese and pigeons, in housing that ranges from a small 'backyard' unit to larger commercial enterprises that include intensive units and extensive organic operations. It can also be used for deep litter. Launched over 18 months ago to a very positive reaction from customers nationwide, a Unibed spokesman told farm 'n' equine, “This is a premium quality bedding that just like the other straw products in our range will rot down very quickly compared to wood based products, therefore helping to keep muck levels to a minimum. “Our aim has been to develop a premium quality bedding material for both amateur and professional poultry customers and to make it available nationwide. As a bagged product, Unibed is easy to handle and very economical to use in any situation It is selling really well and we get a lot of feedback from customers telling us they're pleased with the way it works both on the floor of poultry housing as litter, and in the nesting boxes. “In particular, it doesn't 'clump' together as shavings can if there is a lot of poultry together and as a result, legs stay really clean. The fact that it is easily biodegradeable and breaks down very quickly makes it a very good choice for 'recycling' onto the garden.” For more information, contact Unibed on 01977 796278 or visit www.unibed.co.uk.com
