Innovation Hothouse – call for entries 2011
The Royal Academy of Engineering and Institution of Engineering Designers are working together again on an exciting project to foster the commercialisation of student design projects. The Academy and IED will be joined by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for the Innovation Hothouse for 2011.
The Innovation Hothouse will showcase the very best final year student projects and provide an opportunity for those involved to present their work to a panel of experts. The panel is made up of venture capitalists and business angels who will offer advice and potential funding to develop the project into a commercially viable product.
Entries are welcome from all engineering and product design degree courses in the UK. Students will be invited to attend a regional event to present their project for initial assessment during June 2011 with one entry from each region being selected for the final to be held in London on 21 September 2011 as part of the London Design Festival.
Regional events will be held in various universities and other locations: East Midlands – Nottingham, North West – Liverpool, Scotland & Northern Ireland – Strathclyde, West Midlands – Aston, North East – Newcastle, South West & Wales – Bath, South East – IMechE offices, London.
The regional events will be held between 21 June and 1 July; the actual dates will be confirmed in due course. Travelling expenses incurred by students and graduates presenting projects at both the regional events and the final will be reimbursed.
Get your information pack and enter online at
www.theinnovationhothouse.net (deadline for online applications is 9 June). Judging criteria: each project will be assessed on originality of the idea behind the project, feasibility of the business model, market research undertaken, social impact, sustainability and financial viability.
