CEnv opportunity Society for the Environment licences IED, providing unique opportunity for Members.
New registration available to Members The IED has recently become a fully licenced body of the Society for the Environment, which means that suitably qualified and experienced members can be assessed for registration as Chartered Environmentalists (CEnv).
What is CEnv? CEnv is a status which identifies the holder as a professional environmentalist, on a par with other Chartered professionals such as Chartered Engineers and Chartered Scientists.
How does it work? The IED has become a licenced body of the Society for the Environment, the organisation which oversees the standards for and registration of CEnvs. This means the IED has set in place an
assessment procedure to ensure that successful applicants have demonstrated that they meet the levels of education and/or experience required for registration and have met the thirteen competencies expected of a registered Chartered Environmentalist.
Why would CEnv be applicable to IED members? Design is a major influence on environmental issues, including use of materials, ‘cradle to cradle’ life cycles, recycling, use of energy, production of energy and so on. All engineering and product designers have to be aware of and work to legislation based on or incorporating sustainability and environmental issues. As a result, many members of the Institution should be eligible for registration as CEnv. Leigh Adams, a recently registered CEnv
explains why he applied and how he thinks the registration will help in his career (see below):
How do I apply? To find out more about becoming a Chartered Environmentalist, go to the IED’s website at
www.ied.org.uk where you will find more details, application information and guidelines. The first year of the Institution’s licence includes special dispensation to register existing Members under what is known as the ‘Grandparent’ scheme, which, as applicants under the scheme will have already been processed into membership via interview, allows for those individuals to be assessed and registered at CEnv without a further interview. This scheme is open for a limited time only, so, if you would like to apply for CEnv, it would be wise to do so sooner rather than later!
IED member Leigh Adams comments: Why you should apply for CEnv
I work in consultancy and I chose to apply because I felt it was important for clients to value professional recognition of what is becoming ever more important. With so much political reasoning encroaching on sustainability, it is important for clients to appreciate advice and expertise on a sound scientific and evidence based facts from accredited professionals.
How you think it helps in your professional/career development It helps because clients and employers are now asking for environmental criteria in appointments, so that they can meet their sustainability targets.
How you found the process The Grandparent process which is available for the first 12 months is very easy because
it is predicated on existing professional membership. Therefore assessors are mainly looking at core criteria around education and work experience. I applied directly to the Society of the Environment as the IED were not yet in a position to accredit applicants during last year. The process took around three months, but should now be quicker as the IED have their own assessors in place.
Why you would encourage others to become CEnv With the sustainability element in engineering becoming far more important to address, recognising and rewarding activity in this area should ensure that engineers value training, awareness and the positive contribution that sustainability consideration can make.
