Student Information
“The IED Student Prize for 2010 was open to all university students, but their work could only be entered by the nomination of their course tutor who was restricted to selecting only one student from each course. The submissions then underwent a vigorous marking scheme which was broken down into eight key areas: customer/market need, product design specifications, concept design, concept evaluation, detail design, testing/evaluation of final design, presentation and conclusions. Each project was measured twice (by different members of the Education and Training Committee) for these key points and those with the highest marks were awarded a prize. As you can see, gaining a student prize from the IED is not easy to achieve, therefore, the winners should be proud that the quality of their project has been recognised by champions in the engineering and design field and we wish them every success for the future.” The IED.

Joao Alves and Nathan Wainer received their awards from Alison Shreeve, Head of School, Design & Crafts, at Bucks New University, and in the presence of IED member Keith Winning, a senior pipeline engineer for CB&I Lummus.
Joao said: “This is one way in which all the hard work I put in becomes worthwhile. To be considered the best in the country is a great honour.”
Joao’s project was based on airway management. The project objective consisted of redesigning a disposable Supra-Glottic
10
Mask Airway device by addressing essential key features in its design to achieve outstanding performance. The airway device was called ‘Glottis Airway’ and was aimed at creating an ergonomically and anatomically comfortable product that would work as a non-invasive airway device.
The award winner said the device included a number of novel ergonomic features for optimal design performance and easy use and the design intent addressed issues relevant to airway management.
Nathan is starting the third year of an
apprenticeship with Elster Metering Ltd, based in Canford Road, Luton, Bedfordshire, and said he was ‘very pleased’ to win the award. He has completed the HNC mechanical engineering design course with distinction and is starting the BEng mechanical engineering design.
Dr Tim Coole, Departmental Manager, Design & Crafts at Bucks New University, said: “Joao and Nathan have set a benchmark for the standards of work we are setting. They have beaten students from around 30 other accredited universities nationwide, which is a fantastic achievement.
