Journal and Animal Poison Control Center of the American Society for the Prevention of Animal Cruelty are warning dog owners that the sugar substitute xylitol can cause serious or life threatening problems for dogs. As little as three grams (about 8-10 pieces of gum), can kill a 65-pound dog. Xylitol is a naturally occurring

carbohydrate that was first used as a sugar substitute for people with diabetes. The human body does not need to use insulin to metabolize xylitol. It is now also marketed as an aid to reducing tooth decay due to its anti-bacterial properties. While some specialty-marketed xylitol comes from Finland (the first producer) and the U.S. – from the bark of birch trees – most xylitol on the market today is made from tree bark or other plant material from China. When refined, it looks and tastes like sugar, with about 40% fewer calories.

is available in a crystal form to be used as a sugar substitute, and is an ingredient in many products, such as gum, mints, toothpaste, nasal spray and candy. As some products may advertise “natural sugar” as an ingredient, you must read further to find out that the product contains xylitol. Signs of xylitol poisoning in dogs are a sudden drop in blood sugar, resulting in depression, loss of coordination, and seizures. “These signs can develop quite rapidly, at times less than 30 minutes after ingestion of the product. Therefore it is crucial that pet owners seek veterinary treatment immediately,” says Dr. Eric Dunayer, a toxicologist at the Center. He also says that there seems to be a strong link between xylitol ingestion and the development of liver failure in dogs.
